Hobbies
Most hobbies and interests have stayed constant over my life and only few have changed.
I always had in interest in nature and hiking as well as ecology and computer.
Living history was one of my interests that faded away after the move to New Zealand. After all, not tpp many things are older than 150 years here and my interest was rather in the 15th century.
However I developed a new interest here: hunting.

Nature
The local environment
Back in Germany as a kid and teenager, most trips saw me venturing down to the river Rhine or up into the forest, which was only about 20-30 minutes by foot away. On weekends, I would sometimes spend the whole day in the forest.

My favourite spot was the “Graue Stein”, a rock formation in the middle of the forest that is unique in the fact that it’s the only one around in otherwise rather rolling hills. It always had something mystical about it and has always been a spiritual place for me. I quite often would have climbed on top and spent an hour or longer there, thinking and meditating – sort of.
My brother loved hiking and exploring very much when I was young. So I spend quite a few school holidays with him hiking through Scandinavia, primarily Norway and Sweden. What a rough, amazing and untouched landscape that absolutely fascinated me. You feel so small in the vast landscape, walking without meeting a single soul for days or even weeks.
We often spent the whole 6 weeks of summer school holidays there.

Scouts
First as cub leader for Riverhead Scout Group, then as scout leader. I moved as scout leader to Waimauku and eventually again to Riverhead.
I remain an outdoors and classic scouting person who loves to teach camping, hiking, fire making, cooking on open fire, shelter building and similar activities.
